The James White Scholars Program was started in 20004 to assist local academically motivated students of color, and their parents, with the college admission process. We firmly believe that every student should expect to go to college. Although the JWSP can significantly increase student’s possibility to earn a college scholarship, the program itself does not offer any scholarships, but rather is our goal to provide local students of color and their families with the necessary tools to achieve this dream. Any student of color with a 2.5 grade point average, which includes an acknowledgement of this from their school’s guidance counselor, is invited to join the program. Along with helpful correspondence that is mailed each semester to each student’s home address. JWSP scholars also have access to a wide range of resources that are outside of their traditional school setting. These resources include, but are not limited to, tutoring, access to the community college, and future college visit trips. In addition, the JWSP has identified community leaders who stand ready to be an advocate and mentor for any student of color concerning any particular challenges or questions students have including helping with occupations and job placement, college financial aid and local scholarship opportunities, the overall college application process, and any issues that students face once they have graduated from high school.
Also, to serve a greater number of students, the JWSP and Advocates stand ready to answer any question or concern from any student of color or parent in any grade concerning the education of young in Christian County. To contact James White, a JWSP Advocate, the JWSP, and to update a student’s key data, please e-mail directly from the main JWSP page.
